Cactus, cactus and CACTUS!

San Felipe was nice but not real nice.

Jim was in explorer mode and wanted to drive a little. So off we went. First goal: find a real nice beach.

And yes Baja is full of beaches but some scouting was necessary.

And while we are scouting like true professionals, we realized the scenery, flora and fauna was actually more beautiful then the beaches 🙂

And after the 400th cactus was photographed, the initial excitement settled and we realized we are surrounded by cactus, cactus and some more cactus. So we kept driving.

I could go on. But you get the picture… It was cactus after cactus after cactus…At this point we where driving for 5or 6 hours. Time for a quick but extremely good lunch!

San Felipe is on the Sea of Cortez side of Baja. We drove over to the Pacific Side but after Tijuana we are in serious need of some heat and since its hotter on the east coast we drove back there. On the way, as you can imagine, we saw more cactus. And while beautiful, the excitement clearly faded ever so slightly.

Baja gas stations on the way..

And some old friends on the road.

And finally crossing over to Baja California Sur.

As soon as we hit the eastern coast again we jumped in the Sea of Cortez for a quick refreshment thinking we only have 10 minutes until we can rest in the charming town of Santa Rosalia. We found a half abandoned surreal little miners village.

While nice we thought we can do better…. but the sun is going down.. and after 10 hours in the car now, the usual : “ I told you we should have stayed in Santa Rosalia” vs “ But you told me to keep driving” started . So we went back to driving, followed by some more driving.

Places close after nightfall and we could not even find an open taco place but luckily somewhere in the dark (and it gets REAL dark, REAL quick) a faint glimmer of hope!

Heavenly sent burritos!

Bellys halfway filled we stopped being angry at each other, pinched our butt checks together and decided to do the last hour stretch to Loreto in the pitch black.

In all of this, Jim (who just drove us save and steadily for 13 hours straight) did not complain or flinch even once. Thanks Jim !

What a day.

  2. Bei den vielen stacheligen Kakteen fiel mir natürlich der Spruch des Grossvaters ein:
Der Affe hüpft von Ast zu Ast, bis ihm ein Ast …..you remember?
